HISTORY
Our history as a church is a wonderful mix of outside interest and help, along with local community members putting in hours of volunteer time. We recognize that we are here today because of God's mercy and grace embodied by the years of quiet, faithful service of many community members.
In 1929, The American Sunday School Union made efforts to help meet the spiritual needs of our mountain community. One of their staff, D. C. Elder, organized a Sunday School which met at the Hester Creek School on San Jose-Soquel Road, two miles from Summit Road.
In 1950, our Church returned to its use of the Hester Creek School building for Sunday school, and the first mention of a "preaching service" is noted. The early '60s saw such activities as rallies with special speakers and musical presentations from visiting choirs. Much activity in the early 70s centered around the youth of the mountains.
In May of 1982, the Church ordained John Haak, a local construction worker, San Jose Bible College graduate, and a volunteer youth worker in the Church. By October of that same year, the Church employed John as their first full-time, paid Pastor. In 1983, the Church started a private school, Mountain Bible Christian School.
On Tuesday, October 17, 1989, the 7.1 Loma Prieta Earthquake struck our community. Our building on Summit Road was closed for six months, but aid came from the body of Christ through financial help and skilled labor.
From the 90s to the present date, MBC has supported many local and international outreaches. Here is a list of a few of them:
Building homes and farmlands for the Ixil in Guatemala, in 1996 and 2001.
Kid's Club- an after-school program at Loma Prieta Elementary School, which we started in 2008 with 35 students. We do this in partnership with Christ Child Catholic Church and with the help of Compassion Bridges.
West African Muslims Outreach– One of our elders and his wife have been going to Niger, Africa, for annual two-month stays as we built a relationship that has now blossomed. This is changing a whole tribe of people who now are getting the books of the Bible in their own language.
The Daloy Project-we support leaders in Daloy, Philippines, in their efforts to safeguard children from sex trafficking. They equip and educate youth for their protection.
On June 1, 2021, MBC called Kawika Haglund from Hawaii to be their next Pastor. He moved here with his wife, Jenny, and two young children, Makana (5) and Malia (2).
At the end of March 2021, God also led David and Joy Mosgofian Koeker to MBC to assist in the ministry. David is the Associate Pastor and Joy will focus on discipleship, prayer, and vision for the church. Kawika, David, and Joy were close friends at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, California. The Mosgofian Koeker’s moved with their two children, Kawika (7) and Amaya (4) from Ventura.
God is on the loose and up good things on the Summit, and we look forward to keeping in step with Him through the power of the Holy Spirit.
